“The success of his mission depended entirely upon his skill, courage, and unfaltering devotion to duty.” A recently found San Mateo Times clipping, from July 11, 1942, notes this quote and posthumous award of the Flying Cross that was bestowed upon Burlingame-born, First Lieutenant Herbert C. Mayes, MIA after Midway with 27 other war heroes.
